He tries to incorporate a visit by a doctor every two to three months and typically gives a five-minute lesson on how to treat shrapnel gashes and bullet wounds. “The battle is not taking place at the borders these days. “What would you do if a car bomb went off at a mall and someone in your family was hurt?” he enquired. For a city where a pint is more closely associated with beer than blood, all of this may seem like grim advice, but as Chatterjee once stated, “Everyone must know what to do in an emergency.” Now Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph is the CEO of the Indian Institute of Strategic Threat-Intelligence Analysis and Combat Tactical Science, Dharwad; and Founder & Chief Instructor of Franklin Joseph Krav Maga Self Defense Academy , Bengaluru.
Over the years, our lovely city has gained the nicknames Bean Town, Garden City, Pub Capital, and Silicon City, amongst others. Going by a gathering of determined committee members of Nightingales Lifesaving Services on a Saturday evening, a pretty peculiar one would soon be added to the list. The team decided to firmly reschedule the India Premier League opener between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai India in order to devise marketing plans that would establish Bangalore as the nation’s centre for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The project’s coordinator, BV Murali Mohan, a pulmonologist and doctor at Narayana Hrudayalaya, stated, “In the event of a cardiac arrest, the brain dies six minutes after the heart stops. In Bangalore, it would undoubtedly take more than six minutes for emergency medical services to arrive. CPR helps to restart the heart, pump blood, and keep the brain alive until they do.”
Mohan used the example of New Zealand tail-ender Ewan Chatfield to show that anybody may have an accident — you don’t have to be elderly to do it. Peter Lever’s short delivery in a 1974–75 match against England severely injured Chatfield. His life was saved by England’s physiotherapist Bernard Thomas with a swift mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiac massage. “One of our main challenges is to convince youngster that they need to know CPR, because it could save someone’s life,” Mohan said.
Another advocate for the value of Basic Life Support training is Somnath Chatterjee, a consultant at Manipal Hospital’s critical care unit. “It’s an emergency,” he declared emphatically. “It could happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.” Similar to NLS, Manipal Hospital offers a BLS curriculum (which includes CPR training) to corporates and groups of 20–30 people, like from a specific hours sing community. After a combination of theory and mannequin practice, students who can perform the operation with confidence are awarded a certificate.
August 2008 saw Aysha H, a project engineer from Sobha Developers’ Quality, Safety, and Technology department, attend the Manipal Hospital session. “There are lots of accidents at construction sites,” she stated. “We felt just auditing safety shouldn’t be our job, we should know how to have control over situations.”
Out of curiosity, R Jayachandran, a physical fitness instructor at Fitness First, enroled in the NLS program in April of this year. He remarked, “Indira Nagar and the surrounding areas see a lot of accidents. I can try to save someone’s life at least this way.”
