BENGALURU : City Police Commissioner M N Reddi stated on Saturday that the police’s duty in protecting women’s safety is restricted to addressing the problem’s symptoms rather than its root cause.
He was giving a speech at a press club session on women’s safety. He claimed that while crimes against women are a sign of the issue, they don’t fully capture it. “The involvement of the police in resolving the issue is restricted. We investigate the matter, file FIRs, and punish the offenders. We put in place safeguards against crimes against women. However, he claimed that the crimes are merely signs of a more serious issue.
What is the issue, then? The preconceived ideas that we are programmed to believe from an early age. According to Reddi, these stereotypes are the root cause of abusive behavior toward women. In some places, he claimed, “it is endemic and (stereotypes) are even encouraged.” “They are developed in childhood.” That’s where we ought to begin.
The police would always be on the lookout for anybody engaging in sexual abuse, he insisted. Because they are causing a nuisance in the community, we make sure to at least book them under the Karnataka Police Act. Their names are recorded in our register. Many people who are engaging in such behaviors for the first time are encouraged to keep going down that path if we don’t do this,” he stated. Even though women have made significant progress in recent decades, discrimination still continues, according to D Roopa, Joint Commissioner of Police, City Armed Reserve.
“Even though women are succeeding in many male-dominated fields, there are still concerns about their ability to perform the job. When a guy is given a task and something goes wrong, the responsibility is typically placed on the situation. However, when a woman is involved, it appears that she is incapable of performing the job,” she stated.
