She was verbally and physically assaulted because she refused to pay him the outrageous additional fare he demanded. Our ordinarily brave reporter was shaken, but she held her ground.
This is not an unusual sight in the metropolis. A dip-stick study revealed the following prevalent cases of inappropriate behaviour by car drivers, as reported by passengers.
- Demanding excessive fare.
- When refusing to pay the excess fare, they hurled profanities.
- They retort that they are not afraid and carry on abusing the passenger when you threaten to report them to the police.
- Meddling with the meter and not acknowledging that it has been altered.
- Charging a passenger more just because they are not Kannadigas.
- Mistreating the traveller because they’re not Kannadiga.
- Making lewd gestures and advances at female passengers.
- Refusing to transport the traveller to the location of his choosing.
Sometimes, an auto driver’s impolite behaviour leaves the passengers so stunned that they take a while to reply. How can one combat this threat? What should be done about irresponsible drivers?
Bangalore Mirror requested recommendations, and the following are some of the responses we received:
“Check to see if the driver has the display card when you get in an auto,” stated Shrinivas Murthy, president of the Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union. Take that auto if you don’t see it. Next, just write down the serial number on the display card and report him if you discover that his meter is off or if he is being unpleasant or harassing you.
And what should you do if the driver of the autorickshaw won’t take you where you want to go? “Go where you want to go without waiting for their permission. Rather, get into the car, get the DL number, and tell him where you’re going. Murthy remarked, “He will go quietly where you want to.”
Call the control room
The auto driver should dial the control room number, stated Assistant Sub Inspector of Police Girish. Just provide us with your name and the vehicle registration number. We’ll take action and file a complaint right away. He will pay a fine, but we’ll also get back the extra money he took from you.”
