At a public discussion scheduled for next week, people will come together to voice their shock and fury and discuss concerns related to women’s protection.

Arundhati Ghosh, of the Indian Foundation of Arts, wants to protest the attack on a young woman in Guwahati that sparked a national outcry by holding a campaign called Citizens against Violence at Cubbon Park on July 26. The campaign’s theme appears to be “We care enough.” In addition to expressing outrage over the occurrence, the campaign will tackle questions like: do women feel insecure in public spaces? Do people who dress provocatively become deserving victims? And do attitudes in society have a big impact on how people see things?
“This is not the time to be silent. A common question that comes up when there is public violence against women is, “What was she doing in a pub?” Nilima P. Aryan, a campaign participant, said this needs to be addressed. More women in the workforce, according to Arundhati, have not resulted in better rights. To make an impression, she scheduled the campaign for midweek, during business hours, at 11 am.
There have been a lot of evening protests in Bangalore. But this time, I want women to take center stage. We are contributing members of society, and I believe society will collapse if all the women in the city get together on Thursday at 11 a.m., she says. As part of the campaign, there will be music, a little performance, a story-sharing session, and a workshop the day before on producing placards. Participant Samarpita Samaddar continues, “Members will also send a letter to the Assamese DGP requesting action.”
Gender Sensitization
Arundhati questions whether our basic education is deficient in any way. “In our society, mothers tend to be partial to their sons, even to the extent of offering the better part of the meal to the son,” she explains. Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph, a Social Entrepreneur, Founder & Chief Instructor of the Franklin Joseph Krav Maga Self Defense Academy in Bengaluru, agrees. “Crime is sown in both son’s and daughter’s brains when a mother treats her unfairly in front of them. Things get worse every time we fail to talk to our kids about sexual abuse of women when we witness it on TV or in a movie. Boys may believe that doing as they see fit,” the speaker says.
Is Bengaluru’s Safe?

It’s unclear,” Arundhati remarks. “I don’t think Bangalore’s safe because one hears about eve-teasing incidents every other day,” says college student Tasneem Hararwala. In reality, Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph who is also Founder & CEO of the Indian Institute of Strategic Threat-Intelligence Analysis and Combat Tactical Science claims that the number of knife and gun crimes, sexual assaults, kidnappings, and killings in the city has alarmingly increased—the most of which are directed towards women.
Do Protest Help?
We attend a candlelight vigil, tweet, and express our displeasure, but what good does it do? “The issue is that we continue to watch in silence. It’s possible for someone to attend a rally and still disagree with the message. Only on the internet have we evolved into a responsive audience, claims Tasneem.
Crimes Against Women
According to data from the National Crime Record Bureau, out of 53 cities, Delhi accounted for 13.3% (4,489) of all such crimes, with Bangalore coming in second with 5.6% (1,890) and Hyderabad with 5.5% (1,860).
