Lal Bagh outdoor training 28.05.2023:
Training outdoors is an opportunity to test our training and understand the application and to learn how to adapt. Israeli Military Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) is not a sport for tournaments but training to save our own lives and the lives of our close people. It requires us to acknowledge the ugly reality which stares at our faces on a daily basis and to train to defend ourselves. The basic funda is “Knowledge and awareness are powers and the only damn thing that stands between you and how easily things can go for a toss is your presence of mind and the basic tactics that you learn”.
Guruji Franklin Joseph has this unique way of creating a sense of ease about topics which are more or less taboo and very uncomfortable to acknowledge. This includes an unconventional sort of a sense of humour and involvement of fun elements in training which personally makes it easier for me to come to terms with some of the tougher aspects of the Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) training, particularly in terms of psychology.
So coming to the aspects of this particular outdoor training, we ran over rocks and mud and did the Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) combative training i.e punches, while realising the difficulty of terrain and learning how to adapt. Then we changed location to an area which was filled with dey leaves, insects, twigs, stones etc and did more combative where we had a taste of real time distractions, multiple opponents, slippery terrain etc. We did a few ground techniques where we learn how to fall back without injuring the spine, which is very important as there is a 90% chance of falling down in real scenarios. Just about anything can go for a toss.
Like always, we were reminded of another fundamental aspect of the Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) training “the solution lies in the problem itself”. We learn to use the very distractions and terrain to our advantage. It blew my mind as to how simple and effective it is in terms of applicability. To give an example, what we did as children, just play in parks and throw leaves and small stones at each other was a real skill. Just combining it with the punches makes it more or less life saving.
The best part of it was that we had fun while learning, and it is this kind of learning that stays for a long time. Where else can you just punch each other, roll on dry leaves and get them all over your hair, throw leaves and little stones and twigs at each other, actually intentionally fall and run all over the place, while laughing and having fun on a Sunday other than a Krav Maga outdoor training?
Thank you for this simple yet fun and effective Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) session Guruji Franklin Joseph. And to the ones I trained with. You have been wonderful training partners. Thank you. Looking forward for many more such opportunities.

Outdoor Training At Lalbagh Gardens:
One fine Sunday Guruji Franklin Joseph asked us to be at the Lalbagh Gardens, Bangalore to train a bit differently than what we do in our usual classes. It was not only a different setting, the weather was hot, the ground was rough and the things that we learn were out of the norm.
We started off with 2-3 steep hill runs followed by push-ups as a warm-up. There were a couple of Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) buddy drills to prime our bodies – buddy floor chest press and arm locked push pull. We were pumped!
Deep into the training now, we were rolling on the natural bed of mud and leaves, performing Krav Maga Self Defense (Bengaluru, India) punches while standing on irregular ground and practiced our regular tactics on these surfaces. All this was to simulate real life scenarios. Training in a studio or dojo is good, but when you are out there, you get a look and feel of how a simple change of terrain can make any well rehearsed tactics go haywire.
Guruji Franklin Joseph also had us learn how to take care of distractions while hitting an opponent. This was to simulate multiple attacker situations or anything that has you distracted while in a combat situation. Distractions were in the form of loose mud and dry leaves been thrown at us from all around.
To finish things off, we learnt one specific drill to defend ourselves when we fall on the ground. It was different from a regular “falling on your bum situation”. We had to learn how to fall on your upper back to save our tail bone and get ready to defend and hit while on the floor. This simulates situations where you’re pushed on the floor with force.
Overall, it was a complete brain opener for all of us. While we were used to practising in the studio each week, someone somewhere out there might be planning an attack and they aren’t planning it in a studio setting. Such outdoor real world training days ensure that we stay connected with what’s the come.
Big thanks to Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph for this opportunity to test ourselves.
