Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph, a martial arts instructor and the owner of Krav Maga Bangalore, a school that teaches self-defense skills, offered some advice for parents to share with their kids. We equip the children to defend themselves against physical and mental attacks, knowing that most of their attackers will be well-known individuals. Their greatest tool, trust, will be gained by these attackers as they approach the child and launch an attack. The most timid, traditional, and reclusive people are typically the ones that are targeted. Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph educates the young learner to distinguish between “good” and “bad.”
What is good and bad?
“A child needs to be made very clear that only its parents or medical professionals may touch its private parts when giving it a bath or doing a physical examination. That is seen as a “nice” addition. The youngster needs to understand that a change in touch, particularly one that is exploratory and rotational, denotes sexual and improper touch. According to Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph, CEO of the Indian Institute of Strategic Threat-Intelligence Analysis and Combat Tactical Science, “even verbal seduction can be accomplished by using reassuring language, building a friendly relationship with the child, earning its trust, and then moving in to put it on your lap.”
Defend right
According to Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph, a child who is being molested must also speak up. “The youngster is trained to speak in a firm and confident manner; they are not to weep and plead with her assailant because doing so gives him more authority. Shouting gives the child confidence and scares the assailant. Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph gives the loud, confrontational advice, “The child must repeatedly shout saying, ‘Stop! don’t touch me, you are not my father, let me go.'”
However, since her wrists are tied and she feels like she is going to be raped, she should use her lips and foot if nothing else works. Bite the hand holding her down, and if the man tries to mount her after pushing her into the ground or into a car, she should flip to her side and kick forcefully. Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph, Founder & Chief Instructor of the Franklin Joseph Krav Maga Self Defense Academy in Bengaluru and Dharwad suggests that the groin or the knees be the target location.
Listen, listen, listen
When a child is being molested, they must also speak up, and parents must forcefully listen to them. A child who experiences a parent’s disapproval will never again come forward to voice their complaints. “Children may have vivid imaginations and attempt to captivate parents with bizarre tales. As one never knows if a child is truly being abused by a known individual, parents need to pay attention to their children and investigate the claims made. The parent has to visit the location, conduct their own inquiry, and confirm the veracity of the report. Since most children are afraid and ashamed to tell to parents about physical abuse, if the child has clearly been raped, the parent must take the child right away to a doctor or a trusted family.
“The first thing that I do is bust myths like: the attacker is always a stranger, one is attacked only in dark and lonely alleys, and a rapist can be recognized,” explains Ottilie Kumar, a child and woman psychologist and counselor. In actuality, 95% of rapists—who may be neighbors, uncles, or even close family friends—use trust as a weapon. It is therefore kept quiet in India.
“Rapists don’t care about beauty; they’ll take any victim.” When a youngster freezes in fear, it is assumed that they have given their consent. They typically search for kids who are unable to fight back. A youngster has a lot better chance of escaping when she is trained how to defend herself both verbally and physically. In addition, the likelihood of a case being filed is decreased and it will be viewed as consenting if the victim shows no bruises. This might occur when victims stop in the face of a larger, male attacker who is cowed down. Taller and stronger volunteers who physically grasp the kids and teach them how to fight back work in Ottilie’s seminars. “The child’s confidence grows as a result, and they can handle any situation they encounter,” she says.
In Ottilie’s opinion, parents don’t go out in search of love because their primary focus is on their relationship with their children. These days’ parents are so preoccupied and anxious that they don’t have time for their children. At that time, the predator gains everyone’s trust by breaking inside the house and looking for a weakness. Parents need to set aside time to interact and build relationships with their own children in order to guarantee that their kids feel secure and at ease in their own homes.
When a child is abused or raped…
- Consult a pediatrician or child psychologist with the child and a full body examination be performed.
- Avoid giving the child a bath because bodily fluid samples and swabs must be preserved as proof in court.
- The child must then be brought to the police station, where a formal complaint must be lodged. Terms like “forced kidnapping,” “threats to kill,” and “rape with full intention and motive” must be used in the complaint, along with a correct description of the individual involved, the time and place of the incident, and a certified copy of the doctor’s work.
- The certificate needs to state that the child had semen and saliva on their body, as well as bruising from forced entry.
