In India's outsourcing hub, the Mumbai terror attacks have generated fresh anxieties as well as new commercial prospects.

By Saritha Rai - GlobalPost

India Anoop Ramakrishnan, a 25-year-old engineer working for an outsourcing company in Bangalore, supports telecom networks across Europe and Canada during the work week. Ramakrishnan spends his weekends training with a group of twelve people on how to avoid a flying grenade during a terror attack, how to get out of a gunfight, and how to block an armed attacker's blow.

Bangalore, a vibrant metropolis of eight million people in India, is regarded as the global centre for outsourcing. Tall, dazzling buildings on its streets bear the names of Microsoft, Yahoo!, Google, and General Electric. Engineers and back office staff work continuous 24-hour shifts for businesses like AOL and Citibank in the suburbs.

Bangalore is currently susceptible due to its reputation as a major worldwide outsourcing hub. In the past several weeks, multiple e-mail terror threats were received by six of the city's leading outsourcing corporations. The intelligence agencies of India have issued a warning, stating that following Mumbai, outsourcing companies may be the next target for terrorists.

An army of youthful Indian technologists in Bangalore is naturally nervous.

Similar to Ramakrishnan, scores of techies are swarming to a Franklin Joseph Krav Maga self-defence Aacdemy (Bengaluru, Karnataka, India) class teaching the Israeli fighting style known as Franklin Joseph Krav Maga Self Defence Combat Academy , Bengaluru (Bangalore). "The victims of the Mumbai attack were helpless," Ramakrishnan stated, dressed for the session in black sweatpants, a T-shirt, and protection gear. "I want to be well-prepared."

Ramakrishnan wiped the sweat that trickled down his face after a strenuous two-hour combat training that included jumping, hitting, rolling on the ground, kicking, and throwing punches at imaginary opponents. He said that although the training was challenging, "the real world is tougher."

Another learner, Mrinal Khamboj, 30, who works for Oracle Corporation in the Indian division, said he would benefit greatly from the realistic, no-holds-barred strategies in any hand-to-hand fighting scenario. He had never before encountered a tricky circumstance. "The one time I almost got caught in a fight, I ran away because I'm a marathon runner," he admitted.

Many outsourcing companies, like the one that employs Khamboj, have wide green campuses and modern structures with glass windows. Metal detectors, security cameras, and even physical employee and visitor frisking are used to maintain vigilance. There are campuses that have perimeters surrounded by electric fencing.

However, none of this is impenetrable for example, in the event of a suicide attack.

Furthermore, the world is not the same outside these establishments. The campuses and buildings of the enterprises border densely populated areas. The only weapon used by overworked and insufficiently funded police officers to uphold the law as they patrol these neighbourhoods is a narrow bamboo stick, or lathi.

Bangalore's chief minister, who acknowledges the insufficient security measures in place, has frequently urged the federal government to establish an anti-terror commando team in Bangalore.

Many people feel that the security is insufficient, including Shyamanta Phukan, a diminutive 25-year-old software engineer employed by Alcatel. "A Mumbai can happen anywhere" he declared. Phukan registered for his first Krav Maga Self Defence (Bangalore, India) class last weekend.

Bangalore's outsourcing businesses are boosting security in the meantime. Some are equipping staff members with GPS-tracking cars and establishing command centres that activate in the immediate aftermath of a terror incident. Essential supplies are provided in the guest houses on campus. Bangalore's tech companies are, for the most part, doing the best that they can.

In Franklin Joseph Krav Maga Self Defence Combat Academy , Bengaluru, India, however, following the terror attacks in Mumbai in November, Bangalore Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph has been flooded with questions from worried staff members who are techies. "People want to be better prepared to protect themselves, their family and their community," said Safety Specialist Guruji Franklin Joseph, CEO of Indian Institute of Strategic Threat Intelligence Analysis and Combat Tactical Science. Every weekend, two or three new Krav Maga Bengaluru practitioners sign up for the classes.

A few months ago, Ashish Puri, a manager at Cisco Systems India, decided to participate in the classes because he thought a war had come to his neighbourhood. Puri stated that he was confident in handling difficult scenarios because he had received training and that neither the army commandos nor the police could be relied upon to handle every crisis. "It changes the equation between the attackers and me," he stated.

The telecom engineer Ramakrishnan has been taking a Krav Maga Israeli Martial Arts Self-Defence (Bangalore, India) training for a few weeks. During the course, he has acquired various skills, like how to stay under cover during an attack, how to fall to the ground and roll to a corner during a gunfight, and what to do in the event of a bomb explosion.

He is unaware of engaging in combat with terrorists. However, Ramakrishnan is certain that he is capable of dealing with assaults and road rage, two of Bangalore's minor problems.
